Choosing the Perfect Surgeon for Your LASIK
Considering getting LASIK surgery done on your eyes? Selecting a good surgeon is the first step. In making your choice of surgeons, take into account his personality, reputation, qualifications, experience and the technology and equipment he uses. Without a doubt, the doctor’s experience and qualifications are the most important of these. Keep in mind, after all, that the work of this doctor will impact your vision for the remainder of your life.
Most eye doctors are quite talented and good at the surgeries they perform. Nonetheless, there are a few not-so-good surgeons that you have to watch out for. Therefore, remember to research all surgeons before you hire one for your LASIK surgery.
Research, first of all, the doctor’s reputation. When an eye surgeon maintains membership in a few different professional associations, he shows a fair amount of commitment to that profession. Check and make certain, though, that the association has something to do with the doctor’s chosen field. Membership in something that does not pertain to LASIK does not count.
After you’ve checked out the doctor’s associations, see if you can find out the opinions of people who have hired the doctor in the past. Their views should not be the only determining factor, but they do help you compile a complete portrait of the surgeon.
In addition, you need to find out the total number of LASIK operations the doctor has done, and how long he’s been in this field. Just because every doctor has a “first” patient doesn’t mean you need to be the first.
Once you’ve finished researching the surgeon’s reputation, it’s time to investigate the medical center where the doctor practices. Is the equipment he uses reliable? To make this research helpful, though, you’ll also need to investigate the different kinds of LASIK equipment available. Generally this will mean employing the latest available technology. A medical book could be a good resource with looking for information on custom wavefront lasik or lasik eye surgery.
And finally, as you decide which surgeon to hire, don’t ignore your own intuition. Be sure to set up a time to meet with the surgeon in person. If, during the course of your appointment, something about the doctor nags at you as untrustworthy, then by all means, decline the surgery and look elsewhere. You’d be astonished to know how many times a person’s intuition winds up being right on the mark. And even if your intuition is a bit off, it’s better to go into a procedure like this feeling comfortable with what’s going to happen. Even if it means taking an extra few weeks to find a doctor that you can establish a good relationship with.
